NIGERIA: CHOOSING SANITY OVER LOYALTY

FACT: Nigeria is a satiric country. Satire, being the use of humor or irony to describe otherwise serious situations in an unserious manner, i.e using mockery to expose stupidity. This hypothesis is evidenced in recent events, from the Nigerian president’s refusal to acknowledge the House of representative’s invitation to his reiterating the government’s disgust in the CNN and BBC’S reportage of the #EndSARS Crisis.

The state governors also jumped on the satire train, with a former governor and current minister, Mr.  Raji Fashola leading the investigators’ pack to the governors paying sympathetic visits to the Lagos state governor . The irony of this visit is not lost on one. Condolence messages flowing from all corners of the 36 states to victims (police and businesses affected) but conveniently missing the real victims of the crisis : the patriotic protesters nationwide who lost their lives and also the innocent ones arrested with no one to bail them out of their penury in real life.

Bandits have reportedly killed 1,100 people in Northern Nigeria in 2020 according to reports by amnesty international www.amnesty.org. this is excluding the list of abductees and victims of terrorism which includes most recently, the forty three farmers allegedly beheaded by Boko HARAM in Zabarmari, Borno state on the 28th of November 2020. The order of hypocrisy in our constitution dictates that these victims deserve only expression of shock from the president, requests for closed door meetings with security chiefs, condolence messages from the governor, a promise to fish out the perpetrators and so the cycle goes till the next crisis.

The sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar said the northern part of Nigeria has become the worst place in the country to live in , as bandits has become daring, during the fourth quarterly meeting of Nigeria’s inter religious council in Abuja recently. To counteract the severity of this assertion, another northern leader, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, had to come commiserate with Babajide Sanwo Olu over the recent destruction of Lagos. After all, no region in Nigeria has the monopoly of insecurity crisis. This goes to further the theory, that In the Nigeria political scene, one has to be either political correct or empathically correct.

Choose wisely.
